CBD Vape Juice and CBD Vape Oil in Australia: What Buyers Should Know

Vaping cannabidiol has grown into a distinct category within the broader CBD market, driven by faster onset of effect compared to oil tinctures or gummies and the discreet, portable nature of the format. The Australian market for CBD vape products, however, sits in a more complex legal position than the rest of the CBD category, and understanding what is legal, what is not, and what to check before buying matters more here than in other product formats. This guide walks through the current state of CBD vape juice and vape oil in Australia.

The difference between CBD vape juice and CBD vape oil

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they refer to slightly different product formulations.

CBD vape juice, sometimes called CBD e-liquid, is a formulation designed for standard vape hardware. The base is typically a combination of propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerin (VG), with cannabidiol dissolved into the mixture along with flavourings. The PG/VG base is the same base used in nicotine vape products, which means CBD vape juice is compatible with the standard cartridge, pod, and tank vape devices sold in the mainstream vaping market.

CBD vape oil is a broader term that can refer to any cannabidiol-containing liquid designed to be vaporised, but is most often used for higher-concentration cannabis-derived oils that are not diluted into a PG/VG base. These products typically require specialised hardware (often called concentrate pens or oil vapes) rather than standard vape devices. Some products in this category are extracted using CO2 methods that preserve more of the plant’s original cannabinoid and terpene profile.

The practical difference for consumers: CBD vape juice suits standard vape hardware and delivers a lower dose per puff. CBD vape oil requires specialised hardware and delivers a higher concentration per puff.

CBD vape products sit in a more restrictive legal category than other CBD formats, and the position has tightened over the past two years.

Vaping in Australia is regulated under the Therapeutic Goods Administration framework. Nicotine vaping products have required a prescription since October 2021, and unauthorised nicotine vape supply has been progressively restricted through 2023 and 2024 reforms. Non-nicotine vaping products have historically operated in a less regulated space, but recent policy direction has moved toward tighter oversight of the whole vaping category.

For cannabidiol specifically, the same Schedule 4 (prescription-only) classification that applies to other medical CBD applies to vape formats. This means CBD vape products intended for therapeutic use technically require a prescription and dispensing through the medicinal cannabis pathway. In practice, very few medicinal cannabis products come in vape format because approved manufacturers focus on oil tinctures and capsules, which have simpler regulatory approval pathways.

The hemp-derived CBD framework that permits online sale of oil tinctures, gummies, and topical creams does not extend cleanly to vape products. Vape hardware and vape-compatible liquids sit under separate regulatory frameworks that overlap awkwardly with the hemp-product framework. This grey area is why buyers should be more careful when researching vape products than when researching other CBD formats.

Krush Organics does not currently sell CBD vape juice or vape oil products for the Australian market for exactly this reason. The regulatory position is not clean enough for us to operate in with confidence, and we prefer to focus on categories where the legal framework is well established.

CBD vape legality by Australian state — quick reference

State / Territory Hemp-derived CBD vape (below 0.3% THC) Prescription CBD vape (any strength)
New South Wales Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
Victoria Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
Queensland Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
Western Australia Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
South Australia Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
Tasmania Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
ACT Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber
Northern Territory Grey area for direct sale — hemp-framework imports used Legal via authorised prescriber

The pattern is consistent across states — the regulatory position for CBD vape products is set federally through the TGA and Office of Drug Control, not at state level. Hemp-derived CBD vape juice from brands operating under hemp-product frameworks sits in a defined grey area for direct consumer sale, while prescription CBD vape products are available nationwide through authorised prescribers and TGA-approved suppliers.

What Australians typically use CBD vape products for

The reasons Australian consumers reach for CBD vape products tend to differ from other CBD formats in two main ways.

Speed of effect is the primary driver. Vaped CBD reaches the bloodstream through the lungs, which produces onset within one to three minutes. Oil tinctures held under the tongue produce onset within 15 to 45 minutes. Gummies produce onset within 30 to 90 minutes because the CBD has to pass through digestion first. For customers wanting fast-acting support (situational stress, acute discomfort), vape formats produce the fastest onset.

Discretion and portability drive the second reason. Vape hardware is small, silent, and quickly used, which suits customers who want on-the-go CBD access without carrying an oil dropper or waiting for a gummy to take effect.

The trade-offs against these advantages include shorter effect duration (vaped CBD peaks and clears faster than oral formats), respiratory considerations (vaping any substance introduces particulates into the lungs), and product-quality risk in unregulated markets (see next section).

The risks of unregulated CBD vape products

The CBD vape category has attracted a wider range of product quality than other CBD formats, largely because the regulatory grey area has permitted less oversight than either the medicinal cannabis or hemp-derived CBD frameworks.

The lung is a more sensitive organ than the digestive tract. Products that would cause minor issues if ingested can cause more significant harm when inhaled. This is why the ingredients in vape products matter more than in other formats.

The most concerning contaminant is vitamin E acetate, which was linked to the 2019 outbreak of vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) in the United States. Vitamin E acetate is used as a diluent in some illicit vape products because it thickens the oil and gives it a similar viscosity to more expensive cannabinoid-rich concentrates. When inhaled at temperature, vitamin E acetate can coat the lungs and cause acute injury. Regulated products do not use vitamin E acetate.

Other contaminants to watch for include residual solvents from the extraction process (butane and ethanol), heavy metals leaching from cheap vape hardware coils, and mycotoxins from mould exposure during storage.

Legitimate CBD vape products, produced under proper manufacturing controls and third-party lab-tested, do not carry these risks at any material level. The risk is concentrated in the unregulated end of the market, and it is real enough that we recommend caution.

Better-established alternatives for Australian buyers

For most use cases, the same effects delivered by CBD vape products can be achieved more predictably through better-established formats that operate in clearer legal frameworks.

Sublingual CBD oil tinctures produce onset within 15 to 45 minutes when held under the tongue for 60 to 90 seconds before swallowing. This is slower than vape onset but faster than gummies, and it comes through a clean legal framework. Full spectrum and broad spectrum options are widely available online without a prescription.

CBD gummies produce onset within 30 to 90 minutes but deliver a longer, more sustained effect than vape or oil. This suits customers looking for extended support (sleep, all-day calm) rather than acute onset. Precise dosing is another advantage; each gummy contains a specified milligram of cannabidiol.

Topical CBD creams suit customers whose primary reason for CBD is localised muscle or joint comfort, where the target area sits close to the skin. Onset is within 15 to 30 minutes, and the effect stays localised rather than systemic.

For customers who prefer the vape format specifically, the medicinal cannabis prescription pathway remains an option. A discussion with a GP or telehealth clinic experienced in medicinal cannabis can produce a prescription for a regulated vape product where clinically appropriate.

About Krush Organics

Krush Organics operates in the hemp-derived CBD category, offering CBD gummies at 100 mg per gummy, full spectrum and broad spectrum CBD oil tinctures, topical CBD creams, and pet-specific formulations. Every product stays below the 0.3 percent THC threshold required by Australian hemp-import frameworks, and every batch is third-party lab-tested. Certificates of Analysis for the current batch are published on each product page.

We do not currently offer CBD vape products in the Australian market because the regulatory framework for vape products does not sit cleanly under the hemp-product framework we operate under for other CBD formats.

Delivery is direct from a US manufacturing facility to Australian addresses, typically within seven to ten business days. Every order carries a thirty day money-back guarantee.
